Early reading skills are a reliable predictor of success in later grades. Reading is a skill upon which many other skills are developed. There are a variety of advantages to reading in students’ development. 

Reading Develops Critical Thinkers

Reading develops critical thinking skills. Critical thinking is one of the most important skills we have and the earlier it’s developed, the better. When we read, we are naturally evaluating, analyzing and making judgements about the text. The more students read, the better those skills become. Students who read will grow up to be gifted problem solvers; that skill will likely serve them well in higher education and in the job market. 

Reading Develops Successful Students

The phrase “reading is fundamental’ may be a cliche, but it’s a cliche because it’s true. Reading is the basis for the development of most other knowledge. There is a reason most courses have a textbook; until recently, reading was one of the only ways to really  learn about any subject. When students read, they gain a wealth of knowledge about a variety of subjects. 

Reading Develops Engaged Global Citizens

Reading creates engaged global citizens.  Most of us don’t have the capability to travel all over the world, talk to different people from different cultures and experience different perspectives. Reading puts that possibility at our fingertips. Understanding the world and its many cultures fosters a sense of acceptance in young people. This will lead to greater opportunities for learning, collaboration and partnership in students’ futures.
